Special Topic Masterclass
Sidere: Embracing Performance Excitement

Headshot of Cathy Madden, Master Alexander Technique Teacher and Guest Instructor at AT Motion Center for Actors

with Cathy Madden
Tuesday, January 22nd
3 Hour Masterclass
10:00AM-1:00PM

Workshop Fee: $75

In the ideal preparation, we consciously "ramp" up to a heightened state that fuels our intention and creativity.  While people are sometimes tempted to say this is anxiety, or fear of some sort – the truth is that this readiness is what we desire. It needs its own name!

The root word of desire is sidere, or  “from the stars” and has become my name for this conscious engagement with the unknown - the magic that fuels excellence. In the workshop, we will explore how a sidere -based preparation revives the joy of auditioning and performing. And, each participant will have the opportunity to audition from this Alexander Technique -infused realm of deep play.

The Alexander Technique, originally developed by an actor to save his own acting career, is the "glue" that integrates your acting, voice, speech and movement training. At its heart is the conviction that we are perfectly designed to express an impulse with honesty. Understanding how your physicality and your psychology are coordinated is the connection that Alexander provides. The AT is a process for recovering your responsiveness to the moment without reliance on habit, without awkwardness. It is the practice of a simple set of skills for letting go of habitual mannerisms and postures through which you can move and breathe with freedom and ease. You will be able to perform more efficiently and authentically, open to new experiences and to what partners have to offer.

Class activities include awareness exercises, gentle hands-on feedback from the teachers, basic body-mapping, practicing the coordination of your mind and body in a theater exercise, improvisation or with text.

The course content will focus on these four topics: The Actor's Body in Motion, The Actor's Breathing, The Actor's Presence, Ease of Being for Creativity.

Location: The Barrow Group

Free Introduction: January 23rd
Intensive Fee: $120

This workshop will offer you concrete tools and practices to find specific resources in any room that offer you a sense of support and pleasure. By orienting your attention to these resources, you can feel a sense of ownership of the space you are auditioning in, from the moment you walk in to the moment you leave. Discover resources that can ground you or inspire you, make you feel big or small. Practice foregrounding and backgrounding different stimuli in your field of attention, so that you can resist being sucked into the stimuli that make you nervous and instead find support in the stimuli that center you in your work. This way, you will completely own your work in the room, and the people behind the table will not be able to keep their attention away from your presence, as you will draw attention to yourself at the center of the moment.

This workshop is for actors who are currently auditioning. You will be asked to bring in a short monologue of your choice to apply these tools directly to your audition work.
