Who Studies the Alexander Technique?
Performing and creative artists as well as people who are in pain or have physically demanding jobs with a wide variety of issues including RSI, TMJ, scoliosis, chronic back, neck, shoulder and hip pain as well as back strain resulting from pregnancy and childbirth.

“At the time, I was curious to see what Alexander Technique could do to change my tai chi form. As it turned out, I was pressing myself down into the ground such that plantar warts had developed. I had confused “relax” and “sink” with pressing my whole body down into the ground. The first class was a revelation — not to mention a shock! — and ultimately the plantar wart actually went away. I studied with Belinda for several years and made many changes. It was a great experience. Besides being creative, Belinda is great fun to work with.”

What’s In a Lesson?
Lessons and Classes - Belinda Mello

Belinda Mello will observe and analyze your movement, working with you in your specialized activities. She uses gentle directive touch to guide you in refining how you move so that you can prevent injury and improve your performance.

While practicing familiar activities, you will learn to release tension while gaining more energy and fluidity of motion. No special equipment or clothing is required. Instead of corrective exercises, you will learn about the mechanics of moving and breathing efficiently.

Individual Lessons

A series of lessons will be tailored to your individual needs. A typical lesson lasts 45-60 minutes, once a week. Most students study for a few months while others find the work compelling enough to continue studying for many years. Because the patterns being changed have built up over most of your lifetime, you should expect to invest some time on this process outside of lessons.

Group Classes

Having a chance to watch the movement of another person, or listen to the question of a peer, can deepen the individual’s learning experience. It can be encouraging to receive feedback as you progress and reassuring to share the challenge of learning with other people. Some Alexander Technique teachers, including Belinda Mello, have been specially trained to lead group classes and workshops.
